What it is
Seborrhoeic keratoses are benign, warty growths that appear with age — often described as looking “stuck on” to the skin. They range from pale tan to almost black, and they multiply over the years across the back, chest, face and scalp. They are harmless. They are also frequently mistaken for something more serious, which is a good reason to have one properly assessed.
Assessment matters here
A pigmented, irregular seborrhoeic keratosis can look very like a melanoma to the naked eye, and the reverse is also true. Dermoscopy at assessment distinguishes them. Anything not clearly benign is referred for specialist assessment, not treated.
When treatment is appropriate
Where a lesion is symptomatic — catching on clothing, bleeding, becoming inflamed or repeatedly traumatised — or where it is interfering with function.
How it works
Curettage and cautery under local anaesthetic — the lesion is removed at skin level and the base sealed. This leaves a shallow graze that heals over one to two weeks, usually with a pale mark that fades. Larger or thicker lesions may be excised instead.
