What it is
A lipoma is a benign growth of fat cells sitting just beneath the skin. They feel soft, rubbery and mobile — they slide under your fingers — and are usually painless. They are common, they are not cancer, and they do not become cancer. They do, however, grow slowly, and a lipoma over a joint, under a bra strap or beneath a waistband becomes a genuine clinical nuisance.
When treatment is appropriate
Where a lipoma is growing, painful or tender, presses on surrounding structures, is repeatedly traumatised by clothing or movement, or interferes with function. A lipoma that is painful, growing quickly, or fixed to deeper tissue needs assessment before anything else — those features can point to something other than a simple lipoma, and would be referred rather than treated here.
Who this is for
- A lump that is growing
- A lump that is uncomfortable, tender or pressing on something
- A lump repeatedly caught by clothing or movement
- A lump requiring clinical assessment and diagnosis
How it works
Local anaesthetic, an incision over the lump, the lipoma freed from surrounding tissue and removed whole, then closure with sutures. Larger lipomas need a longer incision and therefore leave a longer scar — this is discussed and quoted at assessment.

Frequently asked questions
Is a lipoma dangerous?
No, lipomas are benign. Rapidly growing, painful or deeply fixed lumps are assessed carefully and referred if there is any doubt.
How big a scar?
Roughly the width of the lump; confirmed at assessment.
Will it grow back?
Not if removed completely.
Can you treat a lipoma on my back?
Usually yes; site, size and indication are assessed at consultation.
Still not sure if this is the right treatment?
Speak to the GP first — the assessment decides the plan, and nothing is booked before then.
