What it is
A keloid is a scar that has overgrown its original wound — raised, firm, often itchy or tender, and extending beyond the boundary of the injury that caused it. They follow piercings, acne, surgery, burns and sometimes minor injuries, and they are more common on the chest, shoulders, earlobes and jawline.
When treatment is appropriate
Where a keloid is symptomatic — itchy, tender or painful — or where it is growing, catching, repeatedly traumatised, or restricting movement.
Important: this is treatment, not removal
Cutting a keloid out usually produces a larger keloid. The established approach is intralesional steroid injection, which flattens and softens the scar and settles the itch and tenderness over a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart. Improvement is realistic; complete disappearance is not, and we will not suggest otherwise.
How it works
Steroid is injected directly into the scar tissue — briefly uncomfortable, over in a minute or two. Treatments are typically spaced four to six weeks apart, with the number agreed at assessment. Most people need a course rather than a single injection.
